Week 5 - Koalas, Kangaroos and Dingos!

I've been loads of places this week. I ended my last post in Surfers where we were about to get the bus to Brisbane. We had a really good time the night before with the girls from the hostel but we packed ourselves up and checked out again.

The walk never happened, we were too tired so instead we went and had a subway for breakfast (classy) and just waited around for our bus. The journey to Brisbane didn't take long so we arrived fairly early and after the massive trek to my hostel with my huge bag went for a look around the town and did a bit of shopping.

I wasn't really a fan of the hostel I was staying in. The people weren't particularly friendly and as Pippa was in another hostel with some friends she was meeting I decided to take the opportunity to have a couple of nights in and catch up on sleep!

On the Monday we went to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary which was a really good day out. Saw so many koalas and had a cuddle with one as well! We also fed kangaroos and saw some of the other animals they had there - lizards, birds, crocodiles all sorts!

That evening Pippa's friends took us on a drive around Brisbane to an area where they normally see kangaroos. We saw absolutely loads just sitting around in the grass it was so cool to see them wild. We saw one particularly massive one on his own which was amazing.

The next day I caught the bus to Australia Zoo early in the morning. Pippa wasn't going to this either and I was a bit worried being on my own at the zoo but luckily I met a girl from the Netherlands in the same position so we went around together. The zoo was amazing, it was the zoo that Steve Irwin set up so it had plenty of crocodiles and it was also cool to have a look at the museum they had set up about him. We saw one of the shows and pottered around seeing all the animals before we caught the bus to Noosa on which I met up with Pippa again.

My favourite snake cause he looked mean!

The view from the treehouse at the zoo, it's beautiful even if the weather is rubbish!

By this point the weather had turned and it was just raining constantly. Our first night in Noosa we spent in our hostels bar as apparently it was the only decent nightlife around. There was a band playing who were quite good so we sat with some people and had some drinks and watched them. The only thing with
Australia is everywhere shuts so early!

The next day was horrible weather which was a shame cause Noosa is meant to be beautiful so I was looking forward to having a beach day. Instead we sat on the wifi, went for a phad thai, did washing then got bored and decided to start drinking. Pippa had some good roommates so we all went into their room played drinking games. Actually turned out to be a really good night!

Again the next day we were moving on. At this point we were splitting up as we were on different tours for Fraser Island. I got the 10:30am bus to Rainbow Beach where I was starting my trip. I checked into my room and met some really nice girls in my group and then we went to the briefing for the trip and I met my car group. I have to say I had such a good car, 7 girls and 1 guy which meant lots of loud cheesy music!

The tour I did was a tag along tour. 32 people all split into 4 groups and we took it in turns to drive 4x4's along the beach. It was so fun although I was pretty nervous the first time I drove I managed to get the hang of it. We also camped for the 2 nights in tents and got given a certain amount of food to last us the 3 days - very much felt like I was in I'm a celebrity.

I'll start with day 1. We got up at 6:30am and had breakfast then packed up our cars with the food, alcohol and sleeping bags then set off. We were in car 1 today which meant the tour leader was driving so no chance to drive on this day. After getting the barge over to Fraser Island we headed off and stopped for lunch. The island is literally a desert island, within the first half an hour I had to wee in a bush!

Fraser Island and all our cars!

We then set off the Lake McKenzie which is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. White sand and crystal clear water it was just such an amazing surrounding. Literally like something on a postcard. Everything in Fraser Island is on sand dunes so it seems very surreal walking through a rainforest barefoot in the sand!

Lake McKenzie - these photos aren't edited and were taken on an iPhone!

After the lake we headed off to our campsite. It was very basic, 2 to a tent with basic toilets and showers - I won't lie I didn't shower the whole time I was there just cause there was no point, I have never felt so dirty and appreciated a shower as much as I did when we got back! We cooked dinner and then just socialised and had drinks, took a walk to the beach and then went to bed.

On day 2 we had to get up at 7am - it wasn't hard seeing as the tent was rock solid, I was using my towel as a pillow and woke up to every little noise - every few hours we were doing a spider check in the tent as at least 2 tents had already had visitors!

We packed up and set off for Indian Head Point - this is when I drove. It was about a 40 minute journey and we had the tunes blasting out so once I relaxed a bit it was so much fun. This is edge of the island and you can climb up the rocks to look out over the sea and the island - reall gorgeous views and we did try and shark spot but couldn't see anything.

Indian Head

Me driving - notice the concentration!

On Fraser Island you aren't allowed to swim in the sea because basically everything can kill you. They have great whites, deadly jellyfish and some of the biggest waves and current I've ever seen. After Indian Head we moved on to our next location which was Lake Wabby. Another beautiful location, it was a 40 minute walk through the rainforest up a massive a sand dune but once we arrived I almost couldn't believe it. It just looked like a desert with a lake right in the middle. It had the little fish that nibble at your feet in the lake as well but I kept my feet firmly on the floor as I'm not a fan of them!

Lake Wabby

We walked back to the car and then set off back to camp for the second night. We saw dingos on the journey home which was so exciting. They can be quite dangerous so you can't interact with them and we had a dingo gate around our camp but it was so cool to see them wild!

Dingos!

The second night was exactly the same as the night before except by this point people had eaten all their food and drank all their alcohol so a lot of things got stolen including 2 loaves of our bread and almost half our alcohol so we were not happy bunnies. We did still enjoy ourselves and had a good night but at 5am got woken up by a girl screaming because there was a rat in her tent. Needless to say sleeping was rather difficult after that point!

On the last day we cleaned up the camp and set off for our last day. We went to the shipwreck on the island and then onto a creek on the island which was like a lazy river as the current pulled you down from one end to the other. It was freezing so I walked down it but it would have been good with a rubber ring! The water here is so pure you can drink it so a lot of people filled up their water bottles.

The shipwreck and our Fraser Island group!

We had a good couple of hours here so got some sunbathing in then we drove back to the barge and back to Rainbkw Island. Me and the girls luckily all got a room together so chilled out for the afternoon then went for an amazing italian. We went over to the other hostel for drinks and ended up on the karaoke machine again and had another good night!

The next day we checked out and got some breakfast then chilled out on the hammocks till the bus came. This is a long one and I'm writing this post on the 5 and a half hour journey from Rainbow Beach to Agnes Water!

On the hammock - my legs got absolutely bitten to shreds on the island!

Fraser Island is literally one of the most best experiences I've had. I met some amazing people who I can't wait to meet up with in Cairns again and just saw some beautiful places. It's 100% what everyone says it is.

Anyway I'll update you all again next week but I now have an hour and a half left so will see you all in 1770!

With Love, Lauren x
